Membership Prerequisites

Know the Journey from Wet Clay to Kiln

Because Kiki Clay Club is a member-driven studio, members should have a basic understanding of the pottery process from wet clay all the way to a finished piece. That means knowing the general stages of making, drying, trimming, glazing, and firing, along with how to safely prepare your work for the next step. You don't need years of experience, but you should feel confident navigating your projects without ongoing instruction.

Not there yet? No worries. A beginner class  is usually all it takes to build the foundation needed to thrive at the Kiki Clay Club.

Thank you for helping us nurture this creative membership club for the LGBTQ+ & friends community in the Palm Springs area.

Membership FAQs

Who is Kiki Clay Club for?

The Kiki Clay club is a members-only club with a focus on providing a safe, creative space for LGBTQ+ folks and our friends. Everyone is welcome who agrees to abide by our code of conduct and support our club philosophy.

Do I need prior pottery experience?

Membership is open to all skill levels as long as you understand the basics of how to clay. For beginners, we do require that you start with an introductory class before diving into your first project. It can be one of the introduction to wheel throwing or handing building classes that we run, or it can be at another studio. We aren't that picky we just want you to have a foundation of how to clay and have the ability to work independently.

What equipment is included in my membership?

Members have access to our pottery wheels & shared tools, slab roller, extruder, hand-building tools, glazes and underglazes, as well as firing services. We provide the essentials so you can focus on shaping your story. You are welcome to bring your own tools or specialty equipment and store it on your shelf. If it doesn't fit on your shelf, talk to the club host.

Are there additional fees beyond membership cost?

We offer add-on reservation hours for members, 25lb bags of clay (included firing fee), classes, workshops & oversize / private kiln firing fees. See our price sheet for more information.

Are there community guidelines?

Yes, we maintain a code of conduct to ensure the studio remains a safe, respectful, and inclusive space for all our members.  Kindness and clean workstations are non-negotiable!

What is the cancellation policy?

We offer flexible month-to-month memberships. You can cancel at any time and won't be billed again. We want the club to fit your life, not stress it. Simply visit the app and cancel your membership. We'll be sad to see you go but we will welcome you back when you are ready (and space is available). Unfortunately we don't pro-rate or provide refunds for memberships that have already been billed. So if you want to cancel, please do so before you are charged.

Where do I buy clay and can I bring my own?

All clay used at the Kiki Clay Club must be purchased from the club. Unfortunately you can't bring in clay or projects from outside the club. This ensures that the clay bodies are compatible with our cone 5 mid-fire studio, glaze recipes, reclaim process, and kiln firing schedules.

What glazes are available and can I bring my own?

The club aims to stock at least a dozen different cone 5 dipping glazes for you to use on your projects. With approval from the club host, you can bring in your own commercial glazes that are compatible with a Cone 5 firing. We highly recommend that you create test tiles or test pieces for your own glazes to ensure compatibility and understand how they mature during firing.

I'm not tech savy, do I have to use an app on my phone?

We use a pretty simple web-based application for our reservation system, membership management, supply purchasing, classes and workshops.  We can help you learn how to use the app and provide additional assistance when needed. We also have a check-in / check-out station at the studio so you don't have to have a phone with you to start/end your reservation.
